What are ovarian cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on the ovaries, the two small organs located on each side of the uterus in women. Most ovarian cysts are harmless and go away on their own without treatment. They are very common and often occur during a woman’s menstrual cycle

What causes ovarian cysts?

Ovarian cysts can form for several reasons:
1.Normal menstrual cycle: Functional cysts, the most common type of ovarian cysts, develop as a normal part of the menstrual cycle. These cysts usually form during ovulation when the ovaries release an egg. Most functional cysts are harmless and resolve on their own within a few menstrual cycles.
2.Hormonal imbalances: Hormonal imbalances, such as those that occur during polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can cause the development of multiple ovarian cysts.
3.Endometriosis: Endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, can lead to the formation of ovarian cysts called endometriomas.
4.Pregnancy: Sometimes, a cyst may develop on the ovary during early pregnancy to support the pregnancy until the placenta forms.
5.Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as pelvic infections or tumors, can also cause ovarian cysts.

Symptoms of ovarian cysts:

Most ovarian cysts do not cause symptoms and are discovered incidentally during a pelvic exam or imaging test. However, when symptoms do occur, they may include:

How are ovarian cysts diagnosed?

Ovarian cysts are often diagnosed during a pelvic exam or imaging tests such as ultrasound or MRI. Your doctor may recommend additional tests or procedures to confirm the diagnosis or rule out other conditions.

Treatment options From Umhlanga Gynecologist, Dr Ati.
Treatment for ovarian cysts depends on several factors, including the type and size of the cyst, your age, and whether you are experiencing symptoms. Treatment options may include:
1.Watchful waiting: If you are not experiencing symptoms and the cyst is small and appears to be a functional cyst, your doctor may recommend monitoring it over time without any treatment.
2.Medications: Hormonal birth control pills may be prescribed to help prevent new cysts from forming or to shrink existing cysts.
3.Surgery: If the cyst is large, causing symptoms, or appears suspicious, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove the cyst. In some cases, the entire ovary may need to be removed (oophorectomy).

Living with ovarian cysts:

1. Maintain open communication with your healthcare provider and discuss any concerns or questions you may have about ovarian cysts or your treatment options.
2. Keep track of your symptoms and menstrual cycle.
3. Practice self-care techniques such as getting regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, and managing stress.

Remember, most ovarian cysts are harmless and resolve on their own. However, if you experience persistent or severe symptoms, it’s important to seek medical attention for evaluation and treatment.
