PREGNANCY & BIRTH | DR EMMANUEL ATI / DURBAN OBSTETRICIAN
Dr Ati is a compassionate Obstetrician and has immense respect for all the sacrifices women make, any woman that has cared for or carried a child and feels that they deserved to be cared for and looked after in return. With his compassion and attention to detail you will be in good hands during your pregnancy.
If you suspect you might be pregnant, be sure to book an appointment with your gynaecologist & obstetrician to confirm the pregnancy with ultrasonography and hormone tests. Once confirmed Dr Ati will discuss the importance of antenatal appointments and their importance for screening and prevention, and ensuring a happy, healthy pregnancy.
Antenatal appointments are done to ensure your health while pregnant, help screen for abnormalities and reduce your risk for developing any problems during your pregnancy journey. Dr Ati is also experienced in the management of high-risk pregnancies should any pre-existing conditions cause complications.
These appointments are also focused on your baby’s growth and development and how best to ensure your little one’s development and promote a positive delivery.

During each trimester your obstetrician will discuss your little one’s developmental phase and do routine scans and screening which may include:
- Ultrasound scans
- Blood pressure checks
- Weighing
- Testing of urine
- Measuring your belly
- Monitoring of baby’s heartbeat
- Blood tests
- Growth Scans and screening for genetic abnormalities
- Anatomy and Sex determining scans when the time comes
- Biochemical screening for Downs syndrome and other chromosomal syndrome
During your antenatal care appointments you will be given the chance to discuss any symptoms such as morning sickness, fatigue, weight gain and anxiety and Dr Ati will answer any of your niggling questions about the birth. You will also be able to plan your delivery – be it natural vaginal birth, with or without pain relief, or caesarean section.
BIRTH
We offer both normal delivery and caesarean section births.
When it comes to childbirth, two primary delivery methods are commonly used: normal delivery (vaginal birth) and caesarean section (C-section). Understanding the differences between these approaches is crucial for expectant mothers.
Normal delivery involves the natural passage of the baby through the birth canal. It is the preferred method when there are no complications, promoting mother-baby bonding and a faster recovery for the mother.
Caesarean section, on the other hand, involves a surgical incision in the abdomen to deliver the baby. This method is necessary when there are risks to the mother or baby’s health, such as certain medical conditions, multiple pregnancies, or complications during labor.

Each approach has its benefits and considerations. It is essential for pregnant women to discuss their options with healthcare professionals to make informed decisions about the safest and most appropriate mode of delivery for their unique circumstances.
